2.0 Four Consecutive Seasons:
- the 147 day breeding season, the period from ewe-ram mating day to eventual birth date.
There is tremendous variation in the duration of the ovulatory period between breeds. The short-breeding breed has a 5 month period from July to January. WWR is using Katahdin a short-breeding breed. Katahdins are noted as a lean, tender and meaty lamb.
Long-breeding breeds are naturally fertile from July to March, a 9 month ovulatory period.
(2) the 30 day lambing period when lambs are born.
WWR’s March 26 to May 6,2011 was this year’s Lambing Season. Our 25 ewes produced 38 lambs,(20 ramlets and 18 ewelets) a 168% production rate with a high 90% live birth rate. The 18 ewelets will join WWR’s breeding flock. Two of the 20 ramlets, because of their striking black and white markings will join WWR’s Petting Zoo; and 18 will go to market
(3) from date of birth, a 150 -180 day growing period.
Lambs are weighted at 50 days and at 100 days to keep track of a lamb’s weight progress. Objective is to gain at least 100+ live weight pounds. The 100+ live pound weight is the equivalent of 45 to 50 hanging pound weight. It is calculated by the butcher. The hanging weight is the basis for the selling price, i.e., 45 pounds x$7 = $315.00

The flock is sent to a grass pasture in the day time. The flock is returned to the barns at night as a precaution from fox and coyotes. The sheep barn has a wood fenced corral with an electric fence. Horses, mules, dogs and llamas also pasture in the barn’s paddock to shy away predators.
Birth facilities should be ready at least two weeks before the expected arrival of the first lamb.
One month prior to lambing, bred females should receive a booster vaccination with a multivalent clostridial vaccine that is protective against Clostridium perfringens type C and D, and Clostridium tetani. This is to ensure the ewes have adequate protection against clostridial diseases (e.g. pulpy kidney, enterotoxaemia and tetanus) and that they pass this protection to their offspring via the colostrum.
- WWR’s three month, varying, Selling Season.
This year 2011 and the next -- 2012, WWR will have only one Selling Season, from mid-September to mid-December.
In 2013, three 3-month, WWR’s Selling Seasons have been set up to better coincide with religious and civic holidays. A criticism of small Ontario sheep farmers is the lack of a consistent supply of lamb meat through out the year. WWR’s 2013 three breeding seasons will provide its customers with a nine month selling season from April to December. If there is a demand, we will eventually have a year-long Selling Season.
3.0 WWR’’s 2011 Sales Order Selling Price
WWR’s 2011 Sales Order selling price will be $7 per hanging pound It INCLUDES: the round trip cost of bringing the sheep to and from the butcher. It also includes the shearing cost, butchering cost, cutting and wrapping costs.
WWR’s Sales Order selling price will EXCLUDE: the 13% HST, extra special cutting and wrapping costs, the cost to pick-up your order from WWR. WWR’s clients are expected to pick-up their order from WWR. Customers can pick up their order from directly from the butcher. WWR could send it to the customer by courier.
WWR’s sales order selling policy will be to bring several lambs to and from the butcher at one time. WWR will NOT bring just one lamb to its butcher.
